Tomorrow, may 10th, is mother day, a very loved festivity here in Mexico ; Carlos and Toto promised to families and friends that they would have enough delicius fishes for everybody to celebrate and prepare great dinners in honor of loved mums everywhere.
The switching temperature conditions of the deeper lays of water made things a little more complicate than usual , the catches behavior is more difficult to predict when sudden changes happen like in this days , but our spearfishing pros still managed to bring home some exceptional specimens.

FIRST AMBERJACK OF THE SEASON, MAY 5/2012

Cinco de Mayo ( 5th of May) is a big festive day here in Mexico and Carlos and Toto celebrated it their way: going out for a big spearfishing day. The result was a great mix bag of big catches including the first big Amberjack of the season. Normally we would not catch this fish until the beginning of June, bui water temperature and schooling of bait fishes may cause the Amberjack season to start early overlapping with the end of the Yellowtail fishing; hey, we have the best of two worlds coming together for some exciting fishing days!

After spending several monthes here in La Paz Clif Cook had to leave to go back in Wyoming but not without a last day out spearfishing. So he was totally happy catching one of his biggest pargo of the season. Congratulations, great catch ! We will be waiting for you to come back as soon as possible to go out again looking for new adventures!

APRIL 28/2012 MIX BAG

When Clif Cook and Toto decided to go out spearfishing today they new that they had a good chance to target two of the most coveted catches of the Sea of Cortez; cabrilla season is now fully developing and this fish's predilection for the sandy bottoms that border the pargo's favorite rocky hunting grounds creates the perfect chance for harvesting a fine mix bag like the one pictured here. As usual, few beautiful specimens : that is all a serius spearfisherman needs to go back home satisfied.

APRIL 25/2012 CABRILLA SEASON

Cabrilla season is officially started and Clif Cook took full advantage of it going out with Toto targeting the big size fishes that now are starting to roam the sandy bottom coves of the Spiritu Santo island.

As usual, a responsible harvesting policy will assure that this specie fishery will enjoy good health for a long future, it is very important to understeand for everybody that the capture of smaller , juvenile specimens is the worst that can happen to such an appreciated catch ; so, releasing smaller fishes catched on rods and selective targeting when spearfishing are musts !

This year the Yellowtails season is lasting longer than in previous yeras. It is still possible to target good ¨jureles¨ around the SpirituSanto island and on the seamounts and when Clif, Carlos and Toto went out they took full vantage of the situation. This was a great day with very good size yellowtails visiting the big pargos hunting grounds...as usual, few great cathces were harvested under the guiding of our spearfishing pro; A day that would make any spearo vacation worth.

Fishing with my boys!
There is nothing more rewarding or fulfilling than fishing with your children once they reach the age that their own passion for fishing starts to burn.
This Easter vacation I took my two young boys Oliver & Nicolas ages 10 & 7 to catch their first yellow tail at El Bajo. What a day it turned out to be.
As we departed from the dock at Costa Baja at 6:45am we picked up our bait from Yacco inside the bay of La Paz and were delighted to see he had a boat full of big caballitos destined to catch us the big one.
We then headed out to El Bajo a famous seamount where the yellow tail had been biting for some days now. Water conditions were excellent with a gentle ripple on the surface and the sun slowly rising we were excited and anxious to get bent over the side of our 22ft Mosquito Fleet super panga accompanied by our long devoted captain Pancho.
After reaching our destination we saw that we were one of ten boats hoping to land some nice yellow tail and get that adrenalin flowing.
Within 10 minutes I was on a fish and felt that awesome power and strength as the challenge began.
Yippee as I landed our first 26 pounder, one down and rearing to go I hooked up another and passed it off to Oliver who continued the fight until it was just a few feet from the surface and his arms were aching and Nicolas took over. Seven years old and he didn't waste anytime at all as he cranked it up to the surface and yes landed his first ever 42 pound yellow tail.
The boys were exhausted but pumped up as they marveled at the fish hold with admiration and a sense of accomplishment.
The day only got better with trigger fish, cabrilla and pargo to complete our mixed bag.
Towards the middle of the afternoon Oliver was using a "whopper stopper" rod about two a a half foot and with 10 pound test line trying to fish for trigger fish when a serious yellow tail struck and started to run for his life. Oliver was screaming with excitement and looked panicked as the fish was about to take all the spool so we slightly tightened the pressure and started to follow the fish with the boat and as it ran we went faster and faster just to regain line. This went on for 10 minutes as we chased down and recovered line inch by inch as the line stretched and we felt that we would it would break.
Oliver managed to get the fish to the surface some 12 feet from the boat and to our amazement it was a fine yellow tail 30 to 40 pounds.
The line went slightly slack and ping it was gone to fight another day but what a thrill as fish beats boy !

APRIL PARGOS ; APRIL 10 / 2012

Dogthoot snappers ( pargos) are definetly one of the most exciting and challanging catches that the Sea of Cortez has to offer. They can reach weight of well over 60 lbs. and will fight with tremendous strengh and violent reactions once they are hooked or shot. Professional guiding is a must when you want to challenge this king of the rocky bottoms and you have to be sure that your equipment is in top shape to have a chance to win this battle.

Chris Snell and Andy Lemke, from Cabo San Luca, visited La Paz only for one day but they did not want to miss the opportunity to go out and spearfish under Toto supervision.

They took vantage from the ending of the yellowtails season that still produces some nice catches that the guys proudly show in these picture. Congratulations to them and we will wait for them for amberjack season in May.

Heidi and Clif had another very productive day in the waters of northern Spiritu Santo Island.

Nice size yellowtails are still found around the rocky points on sandy bottoms and small cabrillas are starting to appear in the shallower boulders close to shore; the cook family took full vantage of their targets chances. Good Job!

PARGOS AND YELLOWTAIL, MARCH 22/2012

Carlos and Toto went out specifically for pargos hunting today but when they had the chance to target a medium size yellowtail they did not think twice about it. The result of this fine day out with very light winds and calm seas was this nice mix bag featuring some big dogthoot snappers and the only yellowtail of the day.

Yellow tail have been biting for a couple of moths now, some nice size ones are landed every day.

The action has picked up now that the cabrila started hitting live bait. If you have caught this fish before you know they are some of the best eating fish there is.

This week John Walton from Seattle and Julie where looking for some yellow tail and got a nice surprise with a good size cabrilla.

SEA OF CORTEZ PARGOS, MARCH 14/1012

The dogthoot snapper (pargo in Spanish) is truly the king of the Sea of Cortez bottoms.

With wheight that can reach as much as 90 lbs. its strenght and violent reactions make it a really formidable adversary for any fisherman on rods or spearfisherman.

This week perfect conditions with almost no wind and very calm seas helped in caprturing these beautiful catches.

After few days of strong northern winds the conditions are back to perfect calm and and we had some of the best days of the season.

We are starting to see some big cabrilla but the main catches are nice size yellowtails and big pargos ( dogthoot snapper). The water is getting a little warmer everyday and it is very hard to imagine a better place to be right now!

The wind is really going topick up in the next days but Toto is still able to reach some secluded coves where big pargos hide in the shade of huge boulder . Today trip to the northern part of Spiritu Santo island was definetly worth . This is a fish that could make the day of any fisherman.

The yellowtails are now everywhere, the biggest specimens swim in small groups around the rocky points of the islands and on the seamounts offering very good shoots chances if you are in the right spot at the right time . Clif shows here the chatch of the day. Ricardo will smoke them and we are all in for a delicious dinner, a real treat!

March begins with good conditions for pargos fishing: the wind has been blowing for few days from the north but now calm seas and quite transparent waters give the spearfisherman and angler the chances to good botom fishing. The Yellowtails are still in their prime season but Toto wanted to go out and search the boulders of the north coast of SpirituSanto Island for some exciting action... if you like hardcore fishing, on rods and reels or speargun you should definetly be here. We are waiting for you and the pargos are too

With Yellowtail season entering its peak, bigger specimen ( in the 40 to 50 lb. category) are getting easier to be found. On rod or spearfishing they offer one of the wildiest fight you can expect from a fish of these dimensions. Sometimes the big yellowtais roam the same bottoms where big dogthoot snapper hide in the shades of the big boulders, making possible to catch a mix bag of huge individuals like these proudly shown by Toto. We, at the Mosquito Fleet beileve in a responsible harvesting of only few mature fishes per species, this is definetly enough to assure the most exciting fishing experience and to continue to enjoy a whealty fisherie for many many years to come.

Under Toto direct supervision and one on one in the water instructions, Tim and his son Austin, from Malibu beach California, enjoied a 3 days beginner course where they have been able to get familiarwith the basic freediiving tecniques and the fundamentals of under water hunting. Some nice captures pictures were the perfect ending for some exciting demanding first days of spearfishing. We will wait for your next visit guys
